Speeding up a simple Innovator implementation

Hello all We're using Aras Innovator in our startup company to manage our BOM. I find it to be a bit slow in loading/opening windows/saving changes, etc. Is there anything I can do to speed things up? What dictates the speed of response? Note I am not an expert in IT so please assume very little knowledge :) Our implementation: Aras is installed on a simple Windows server used only for ARAS. It's not a fast machine, but not ridiculously slow either - I can get specs if relevant. It's accessed via Firefox by my Win7 PC - I am currently the only user. PC is high spec machine for CAD. They're both on the same wired network. Many thanks Bob

  • Bob, I'm not sure what version of Aras Innovator you are using. Keep in mind as much you are using the system (without cleaning browser cache) - the speed of loading window is higher. Aras upgrade speed of page loading in last 2 Service Packs. If you are subscriber you can talk with Aras support for upgrade services.
  • Hi Zahar - thanks for that info. I'm not a subscriber (we're a startup with zero budget for PLM systems, hence why we chose Aras!) and am running v11.0 SP5. Am I right in thinking I can only upgrade if we subscribe? Bob
  • Hi Bob. I think Aras can sell you upgrade as a service, but you really need to contact the [email protected] with this question. About the speed: one more thing you can check is:
    • your company firewall, that it is not blocking anything between Aras Application Server & Sql Server and between Aras application server & client machines.
    • As you are a startup i guess the SQL Server and Aras installed on the same machine, this also can slow the server.
  • Hi Bob, maybe you should wait for SP9 which is due in December (umm....) ;-) As far as I recall it should be an open release, which means you can download it even if you are not a subscriber. From all what I have heard on the Aras ACE Event in Berlin last month, performance has improved a lot there, so maybe it's worth the wait. (Plus it adds support for Microsoft Edge browser) \Ralf
  • Bob, Let us get you going....the free version does not come with support but I can see what I can get together.  (It may cost you a bottle of local spirits thought -  ? ) The above notes/suggestions are solid. Can u advise on the following:
    • # users
    • Server processor & RAM
    • Environment config - i.e. are Aras and SQL on same server, etc...
    • Can you describe how you are using Aras?  BOM, workflow, custom methods, etc???
Im curious - how are you managing CAD? SP 9 will be an open release with a number of performance improvements.  It is still on target for this month.  I regularly use SP7 and 8 on my surface with our Demo Environment and the performance is good.  Not that this says much --- just a data point. Lets chat and see what we can do....   -Dave
  • Hi guys, thanks. From what I've learned, yes SP9 could be a big help. I have Innovator V11.0 SP5 running on Windows Server 2012 R2, a machine (2.8GHz Xeon, 8GB RAM) dedicated to Aras and its SQL Server database. It’s accessed via a wired network from my high spec (dual 2.8GHz Xeon, 48GB RAM, 1.5GB graphics...) Win7 PC in Firefox. I posted on the forum as it feels a bit slow – perhaps 2-3 seconds to perform each action or load a window. I am currently the only user. I use it to issue part numbers, track BOMs and store drawings/data sheets. Very basic functionality – in fact I’ve made a few clumsy modifications to permissions and lifecycles so I can make changes without using the change control process, as frankly I haven’t spent the time to understand how it works. ECNs are on paper! I've also customised some reports. I manage CAD files outside ARAS. As the only user, I'm just disciplined with my file naming. @Dave - maybe you've realised we're a Scottish company ;) Our budget doesn't allow for consulting support fees, but I'm sure we could find something in liquid form! [email protected] Cheers all Bob
  • Hello again everyone I see SP9 is now available. How feasible is it to upgrade myself from SP5? We still have zero budget for consulting fees! Many thanks Bob
  • Bob An upgrade to SP9 "could" be done by yourself, but it is not recommended. The reason is that there are a number of changes to the core to support the removal of client configurations that were needed for Firefiox & IE.  You cannot use an SP5 database with SP9 - they need to match the code tree. The unfortunate, sort answer is you will need to rebuild a new SP9 environment.  You can try to move some of your data with AML queries to speed up the process.  But this needs to be done in order. This is the huge value point of the subscription.  You may want to look at that and see if you can gain any traction with your leadership there - value of subscription vs. cost to pay for consultant.  Based on your product I am sure there is value for your team in all of our applications from requirements management, to quality, to manufacturing process planning.  You can even user Aras as a CRM...we do.   Sorry this is not the answer you want.  I hope we can keep you in the family!   D
