Workflow Continues after Lifecycle is Cancelled

I have been trying numerous things to get my workflow to cancel with the Lifecycle. However, I seem to get the same result. Lifecycle is cancelled but the users can still vote on the workflow. 

I have tried going into the specific workflow process instance that is generated from the "workflow map" view within the project. That pops up the warning message that "once cancelled it cannot be undone". However once again i return to the project just to see the vote active and the workflow continues. 

How do i get the two to synchronize. I have read through three different configuration class manuals and still haven't found the answer.

NOTE: Just to be fully transparent my C# skills are minimal to null. (i can read and understand but cannot write them). So any help would be greatly appreciated.
