It´s possible, but it´s not easy to do.
You have Workflow Maps and Workflow Processes. You modified the Map, but this only affects new Processes. All existing ECOs, PRs, etc. were built on the previous Map.
Each ECO, PR,.. has it´s own Workflow Process. You have to modify each single one to match the new Map. I have done this in the past and often ended up manipulating various "state"-properties directly in the SQL database. So a modification like this requires a very good knowledge of the overall structure of Workflows, Activities and Assignments. There is no blue-print of how to do it cause it very much depends on the Workflow and your modifications. Some stuff is easy, other stuff will take you hours.
If possible, just accept the situation. People shall finish the existing CM processes or cancel them (if you have a cancel voting (!) option!).
