This is not configurable from within the database. The best solution for this would be your suggestion of using an 'OnShowItem' event.
One thing to note is that this event will be called every time the item is opened whether that is from the main grid or from a relationships grid. You can use the following line of code to determine if the item is being opened from a relationships grid, so that you can display the Relationship instead.
