You can actually use the

getProperty() function to specify a default/back-up value to use in the event that the server returns a null result. Instead of calling job_no.getProperty("property_name"), try job_no.getProperty("property_name","").
This will ensure that you assign an empty string (or whatever default value you choose) when the server returns a null value for your property.
