You can find a simple example of creating a connection from an external application using the IOM.dll in the
Aras Innovator Programmer's Guide in Section 10.1.
After making this connection, you can use the same kind of C# to query for an item that you would from within a Method inside of Innovator. You can look at Section 7 of the same Programmer's Guide for a "cookbook" of different code samples. Section 7.3 specifically includes a simple example of querying for an item.
