Introducing InnovatorEdge for Aras Builders
Last week, Aras announced the official release of Aras InnovatorEdge, a cloud-based integration platform that extends and integrates Aras Innovator® across the broader digital enterprise ecosystem. With InnovatorEdge, Aras developers and low-code builders can govern access to digital thread services, connect external applications, rapidly deliver lightweight task apps, and enable AI agents that work with your PLM data more quickly than ever before.
In this post, we'll explore what InnovatorEdge is, which use cases it benefits, and how to get started.
Not sure if Aras InnovatorEdge is for you? Typical InnovatorEdge users are “Aras builders,” such as developers, PLM admins, low-coders, and “citizen developers.” Keep reading even if you aren’t an Aras builder – you may benefit from integrations, apps, or AI tools built with InnovatorEdge!
What is Aras InnovatorEdge?
Aras InnovatorEdge is a cloud-based integration platform that extends Aras Innovator beyond the traditional web UI, enabling your PLM data and business logic to be securely consumed by external applications, automations, and AI services across the enterprise.
InnovatorEdge includes three core services:
- Aras InnovatorEdge API Management (Edge API)
- Aras InnovatorEdge Builder (Edge Builder)
- Aras InnovatorEdge AI (Edge AI)
Together, these services help address a persistent challenge many organizations face: product and process truth is governed in PLM, but the business needs that truth to be available everywhere work happens, including other systems, role-specific apps, and AI-driven workflows.
Let’s take a look at each core service to learn what they do and how they work together.
Edge API: define and publish APIs with low-code
Aras InnovatorEdge API is a secure, cloud-delivered service that lets you define OData-compliant APIs based on your Aras Innovator data. Instead of writing custom integration code, you can connect an Innovator instance, choose data and logic to expose, configure authentication, and you've got an API that's ready to use in a downstream integration, app, or AI tool. The custom API schema adds an additional layer of control on top of Aras Innovator's permission model, giving you fine-grained control over which data external consumers can access.
Edge Builder: build and deploy task apps
Aras InnovatorEdge Builder is a SaaS-based development environment for rapidly building, hosting, and publishing task-based apps that consume your Edge APIs. It includes a CLI for scaffolding projects, a React component library built on Carbon, environment management, and self-service hosting on Aras Cloud. With Edge Builder, developers no longer have to spend weeks cobbling together apps, choosing frameworks, and wrangling infrastructure for hosting. Now we have an AI-friendly set of tools to build and deploy apps in minutes.
Edge AI: agentic workflows and AI services for PLM
Aras InnovatorEdge AI is a suite of services for building, deploying, running, and governing agentic workflows and AI services across the Aras Innovator PLM ecosystem. By combining Edge AI with your Edge APIs, you can create powerful AI tools for your users while maintaining the controls and visibility that are so crucial in enterprise environments. The possibilities are endless once agents have the right context and tools.
Three core use cases
Aras InnovatorEdge is incredibly flexible in the problems it can solve. Most use cases fall into at least one of these three categories:
1: System-to-system connections
You need PLM data flowing to your ERP, MES, CMS, or other enterprise systems. Instead of writing custom integration code and maintaining point-to-point interfaces, you can define an Edge API that exposes exactly the data the downstream system needs - nothing more, nothing less.
2: Task-based apps for non-engineering users
Not everyone who uses PLM data needs (or wants) to use the full Aras Innovator web client. An external supplier might only need to view and update their parts. A quality inspector might prefer to use a mobile app to browse on the shop floor. Edge Builder helps you deliver secure apps and portals that give users a focused experience for the task at hand.
3: AI and analytics
When connecting AI services or analytics platforms to your PLM data, you need granular control over what gets exposed. Edge APIs act as a data gateway, selectively exposing data for machine learning, reporting, or agent-based automation, while Edge AI enables governed agentic workflows and AI services across the Innovator ecosystem.
If you’re still reading at this point, the odds are good that you have a use case that falls into one of these categories. Or maybe you’re wondering what makes InnovatorEdge a better solution than what Aras developers have been doing for the last 20 years.
Why Aras InnovatorEdge?
Faster delivery
Traditional approaches - custom authentication, custom integration code, and one-off portal development - are expensive and time-consuming. They often require deep knowledge of the Aras Innovator data model, and can be brittle when things change. However, InnovatorEdge helps teams move faster with low-code API definition, a SaaS app environment, and services designed to accelerate delivery.
Governed access
You define exactly which data and operations are available through Edge APIs, building on your existing Innovator permissions to ensure your data is protected. You also have two options for authentication: API keys for machine-to-machine integrations, or Aras Cloud identity & access management for user authentication.
Broad compatibility
InnovatorEdge works with any supported release of Aras Innovator, across SaaS, on-premises, and hybrid deployments. That means most subscribers can start benefiting from Edge services right away – no upgrade required.
Note: On-prem and hybrid deployments require the Aras Innovator server to have internet access to communicate with the InnovatorEdge services. Subscribers using an unsupported Aras Innovator release may need to upgrade before using some or all Edge features.
Always current
InnovatorEdge is a cloud service with its own release cycle decoupled from Aras Innovator releases. That enables Aras to deliver new services and ship regular updates to address new requirements and expand capabilities. With Edge, you’re always on the latest release.
Get started
Ready to dive in? We’re launching a series of blog posts packed with practical tips and technical walkthroughs to help builders hit the ground running with InnovatorEdge services. If you don’t want to wait for the next post to drop, here are some quick resources to help you get started today.
Accessing InnovatorEdge
Your company needs an Aras InnovatorEdge account to access the Edge services described above. If your company already has an account, talk to your tenant owner (likely an admin at your company) to get access.
Otherwise, here’s how to request a company account:
- Identify who should be the tenant owner for your company. This person will be responsible for tenant configuration, user management, and receiving official communications about InnovatorEdge. Note that there may only be one tenant owner per account.
- The tenant owner should contact your company’s Aras Customer Success Manager (for subscribers) or Aras Global Alliance contact (for partners) to request an account.
- Once the tenant owner receives login credentials, they can access InnovatorEdge and use the Aras Cloud identity and access management (CIAM) service to grant access to other company users.
