What was your first or strangest job?
My first job was working as an assistant hockey coach for Peabody Youth Hockey. I enjoyed it a lot!

What do you like most about your job at Aras?
The community here at Aras is incredible. Everybody is so helpful, kind, and determined to make the company better. I really like my job because I get to work hands on with an ambitious team and make a difference. The ability to "wear multiple hats" at Aras is one of the things I like most about my job because not only can I gain more knowledge in different areas, but I can gain experience to be used in the future as well.

What is your greatest accomplishment, work or personal?
As of right now, my greatest accomplishment is achieving my bachelors degree in Marketing from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

If you could hang out with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in several places.
1. Terceira, Azores
2. Algarve, Portugal
3. Lowell, Massachusetts

What was your first or strangest job?
My first official job was at Demoulas as a bagger. My cashiers always had the longest lines.
Pick three words to describe yourself.
1. Protective. I protect my family and my teams instinctively and unconditionally.
2. Patient, but not by nature!
3. Portuguese-American. :-)

What is one thing on your bucket list?
I want to write and publish a book. (It's in process!)

What is your favorite quote?
"United we stand. Divided we fall." --- Aesop

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
I am an all species, all methods angler. During the hours that I should be sleeping, I fish from shore or by kayak, boat, or skishing with lure, flies, and bait. I draw the line, pardon the pun, at noodling - which is fishing with my bare hands. Using my fingers as fake food feels improper.

The main objective of this immersive summer internship was for students to discover the power and challenges of digital engineering principles and techniques – and to document it in a way that would provide a roadmap for doing the same within actual engineering environments. The group was tasked to take an off-the-shelf drone, create a system model from the existing manufacturer’s documentation, and apply new requirements for it to perform a search and rescue mission. This task was chosen deliberately because it represents a common scenario in the defense industry—reuse and repurpose of an existing complex system that was designed awhile back.

A Hands-on Experience with PLM
This summer program provided the interns with digital project management and engineering tools to develop and manage a drone. In conjunction with our partner, Anautics, Aras Innovator was implemented as the core solution for the program. It was the underlying platform that managed data from multiple sources and provided configuration management, version control, and workflow. Students were given a unique, hands-on opportunity to explore the flexibility, adaptability, and other benefits that a PLM solution offers in product innovation, design, development, and management.

The unique open architecture of the Aras platform enables integration with authoring tools and enterprise systems. For this project, the team was able to easily integrate with Magic Draw, Atlassian, and SOLIDWORKS. Bringing data from different disciplines together delivers cross-disciplinary collaboration and change management, and provides a broad, cohesive view of product data. The Aras platform was built on open design principles ensuring that the IT ecosystem will function optimally, and that teams can collaborate across the entire product lifecycle.

Although this group was not able to do any real testing due to clearance requirements, they put together a successful demo showing how to pull on the drone’s digital thread. Whether it was recreating decision threads, highlighting which tools were used, showing what meetings were had, or showcasing what products were built, the purpose of the demo was to show how the team could pull on any one of those digital threads. Through integrated tools, the team had enough CAD data, configuration management data, and software data in one environment that they could demonstrate how a single change would affect the entire system. This was something that had been talked about before, but not demonstrated. After all the effort to reverse engineer a drone, it was a great success to demonstrate a digital thread in action.

Not only was Aras Innovator implemented as the core solution, but the group utilized the platform to develop training materials, documents, and videos that others can reference to understand the process. It is extremely valuable to have the ability to connect training materials and documents with the design data of the project because it enables an understanding of the bigger picture.

Developing the Workforce of the Future
While the ultimate goal of this summer program was to discover the power and challenges of digital engineering principles and techniques, this program was able to accomplish several things. First, it provided an amazing work opportunity for STEM students. These students were able to work on a project related to defense (which is oftentimes difficult), they were given hands-on exposure to a PLM solution which will help them transition to the professional workforce, and they were able to interact and build relationships with workers in the defense industry. Second, this project quickly closed the engineering gap. A group of STEM students were pulled together on a tight timeline to find a solution to an engineering problem in about four months. In a traditional contract setting, that could have taken anywhere from 18-24 months. Finally, this was an opportunity for the AFRL to begin recruiting the next generation of engineers to support next generation capabilities.

Although this was originally meant to be a summer program, it was so successful AFRL wants to keep it going and make it part of the curriculum at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). More details are to come, but we are excited to support in any way that we can!

A Drone and its Digital Thread

AFRL Summer Program
The United States Air Force’s Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and their innovation partner, The Wright Brothers Institute (WBI), joined forces this past summer to sponsor an internship program, The Summer of Innovation – Digital Drone.
Where did you grow up?
Maine and New Brunswick, Canada

What was your first or strangest job?
My first job was an assistant summer swim coach for our city swim program when I was 15 or 16. I loved it because I was able to be outside in the sun and pass along my love of swimming to children.

What do you like most about your job at Aras?
I'd have to say the relationship piece of my job is what I enjoy most. From interacting with the hiring managers, to the applicants applying for our jobs, building those relationships is very rewarding.

What is your greatest accomplishment, work or personal?
That is a tough question! I would have to say my greatest accomplishment personally was competing in and finishing my first Ironman at Lake Placid in 2018. It was a goal I had set when my daughter was born, so completing it with her on the sidelines watching and cheering me on was a personal highlight.

Tell us a fun fact about you.
I am really good at handstands and cartwheels - they are a staple on beach days!

Pick three words to describe yourself.
Motivated, kind, curious.

What is one thing on your bucket list?
Skiing in Europe! The mountain and the community are quite unique, so I look forward to the day I can ski Courchevel in France or Zermatt in Switzerland.

What is your favorite quote?
I am a huge quote person, but if I had to pick one it would be, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
Supporting my daughter, skiing, hiking, surfing, reading, and competing in endurance events - such as triathlons.

You’re about to perform in a karaoke bar. What song do you pick?
Anything from the 80's! Don't Stop Believing by Journey would be a top choice.

If you could hang out with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
My mother because she has great advice and has always been there for me. Having a day to hang out without any distractions would be a dream.

Employee Spotlight: Skyler Crossman, Software Engineer

Our Employee Spotlight Series highlights employees from around the world to showcase the awesome talent and personality that makes up Aras.
Where did you grow up?
Middletown, Vermont

What was your first or strangest job?
It wasn't a job exactly, but I have been paid to run tabletop games before.

What do you like most about your job at Aras?
I love having the freedom to play around with new technology.

What is your greatest accomplishment, work or personal?
It might be that I've been to nationals for two different sports: fencing and quidditch.

Tell us a fun fact about you.
I used to do stage comedy. My best bit was actually about one of my performances, which ran the edge of working blue.

Pick three words to describe yourself.
Analytical, Absentminded, Alliterative

What is one thing on your bucket list?
I'd like to run my own software company.

What is your favorite quote?
"The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't." - Douglas Adams, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
I read a lot of books. Mostly science fiction and fantasy, but also histories, pop-sci books, textbooks. . . I'm really not that discriminating when it comes to literature.

You’re about to perform in a karaoke bar. What song do you pick?
"Health to the Company." It's not exactly karaoke's style, but I do know all the words.

If you could hang out with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
Paul Graham. I'd want to ask him about why his website looks like that and find out what kind of games he plays.

Employee Spotlight: Katie Richmond, Field Marketing Manager

Our Employee Spotlight Series highlights employees from around the world to showcase the awesome talent and personality that makes up Aras.
What was your first or strangest job?
I worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor for my first job. I taught many kids how to swim, as well as a few adults.

What do you like most about your job at Aras?
Being new it's hard to say what I like most about my job. However, I'm enjoying getting to know Aras, the people, and the markets we serve.

What is your greatest accomplishment, work or personal?
I have many work and personal accomplishments, it's hard to narrow. I'm just grateful to be where I am in both my personal and work life :)

Tell us a fun fact about you.
I'm licensed IL Real Estate Agent. I took my love for Redfin and Zillow scrolling to the next level.

You’re about to perform in a karaoke bar. What song do you pick?
I always try to pick a song everyone loves so no one can hear my voice. My go-to would be Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance with Somebody.

If you could hang out with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
My best friend, Catherine. We've been friends since our freshman year of high school. We've managed to stay close even though we live in different states and have busy lives with our families and careers.
