The paper showcases the importance of integration of product development with manufacturing via digital data— or the digital thread.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As the paper notes, techniques such as automated EBOM-MBOM transformation support the digital thread and help shorten product development timeline and improve product quality. But even at more advanced product organizations, those with a digital twin vision (complete, connected, digital definition of the product, how it functions, and how it is manufactured), there are still gaps with manual tasks across the lifecycle, especially within the transfer of information to manufacturing. The paper concludes by showcasing an innovative way to integrate Manufacturing Process Planning and PLM to create a true digital thread.

Companies are unable to get a complete product bill of materials. Component management is commonly managed in excel spreadsheets, and compliance management is frequently done outside of the PLM platform. Change management within many of the solutions is considered to be restrictive and not flexible enough to support the increasingly complex product definitions and the myriads of personnel who need to be engaged in the change process.
&lt;h3&gt;PLM in High Tech - A New Vision&lt;/h3&gt;
It’s crucial to recognize that there is no one system that will resolve every business need for managing the product, and that PLM is a business approach, a practice of managing product information cradle to grave. &lt;li&gt;In another example, &lt;a href="http://www.technewsworld.com/story/83482.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"&gt;Google&amp;#39;s Self-Driving Car Project and Fiat Chrysler&lt;/a&gt; last week announced that they would integrate autonomous vehicle technology into 2017 Chrysler minivans. It is the first time Google has worked directly with a car manufacturer to integrate its self-driving technology into a passenger vehicle.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;In terms of the connected car, just this week, &lt;a href="http://www.inautonews.com/chevrolet-introduces-a-new-predictive-maintenance-feature" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"&gt;General Motors introduced&lt;/a&gt; what they cite as the industry&amp;rsquo;s first predictive technology, designed to warn drivers over potential maintenance issues with the car&amp;rsquo;s starter motor, fuel pump and 12-volt battery and other components. It is touted as technology that&amp;rsquo;s similar to innovations found on the Boeing 787, which can send in-flight messages to ground crews alerting them of parts needing inspection before the plane arrives.&lt;/li&gt;
