Hello,

We are currently implementing user authentication (ID and password) through an external web page that was developed separately from the standard Aras interface.

After successful authentication, we would like to redirect users to the Aras main page by logging in via a URL that includes the user ID, password, and database name.

If anyone is familiar with how to implement this kind of customization, we would greatly appreciate your advice.
For reference, our Aras Innovator version is Release 35.

Release 36 Relationship Tab Indicators in Release Notes: First Listed, Then Removed - What is Aras Up To?

Hi community,

We are at a point in the community where Aras cannot do anything without it being noticed. Even when they try to keep things secret, it’s usually already too late!

Either it was an accident, or it was a "planned leak" of new features - similar to how Apple handles the iPhone 😅- done just for the fun of seeing if anyone notices and to generate a bit of marketing buzz.

Has anyone of you studied the lastest release notes? A few weeks ago Release 36 was released. In general it contains:

1. A much more modern version of this one: https://github.com/ArasLabs/my-recent-items
2. A fix for this one: How can I use wildcard filters for dropdowns in grid and for predefined Default Searches?
3. And some other quality of live improvements.

BUT: The first version of the release notes also mentioned this additional feature:

The first idea was discussed years ago in a Github discussion and Eli helped to get the first draft working: https://github.com/ArasLabs/set-tab-color/issues/1

But it seems like the Release 36 were updated last week. The new additional relationship feature was now removed.

All jokes aside, I assume the topic was accidentally listed in the release notes. No big deal - it wasn´t even mentioned on the roadmap. Back then in Innovator 11, it wasn´t possible to implement something like this in a meaningful way in the standard product. I didn’t even expect it to show up anytime soon.

But: Is this something that Aras is currently actively working on? I am super curious to see how they´ll solve this on a technical level! This is definitely a feature to look forward to. People will love it!

Does anyone know more?

Notify User When a Relationship is Added when the Source ItemType and Related ItemType have matching properties

I am trying to notify the user when a relationship is added where the Source Item has a property of _part_number that is equal to the Related Item property item_number, but continue with the action of adding. Basically just give a warning.

I have tried server side, got the message to be sent with an error message, but that stops the progress of the action.

I understand now that it needs to be a client side action, but I am having issues with getting the Items in the method to get the properties to then compare.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

What is the best way to clean up and delete useless / redundant History entries?

Hi community,

I assume many of you use the item history for Parts, CAD or other ItemTypes. Dependent on how you configured the history, the history entries itself are more or less useful.

I noticed that we get a lot of useless history entries, when users do mainly relationship edits. In this case we often have plain "update" entries without any comment. Some of these empty "update" entries are caused by Methods in the background. See also: How to prevent/suppress that history entries are created automatically for AML update queries?

The history table can be one of the biggest in Innovator, so I wonder if we can do some cleanup to optimize the data quality?
In our case I expect 20%-25% of the history entries to be redundant.

I definitely don´t want to remove all "Update" related entries. But I only want to store the "last" entry of a major change operation.
Just the ones that are around less than 30 seconds apart, were created by the same person and have no comment.

Example:

Is there any other answer than "SQL" (or AI ) to analyse which entries can be deleted?

Is there anything else we need to consider? Thanks for any suggestions or second thoughts!

Any best practice tips to clean up orphaned files in the Global Files Container?

Hi community,

on a regular basic I clean up orphaned files. Typically these are files that were used in a relationship or file property item.

But we have another type of files -> images and thumbnails. If thumbnails are not referenced any more, they are not marked as orphaned. They stay in the Global Files Container. We cannot use the locator to check if the files are still used.

What is the best way to get and overview of these files?

I am already able to find orphaned thumbnails of Parts via SQL.

But I noticed that it´s dangerous to only check the "Part" Item Type. The "Image" property is used more than 30 ItemTypes. Just because my orphaned image isn´t use in a Part, doesn´t mean it isn´t use in a mpp_Tool

So I wonder if my current approach to get the files via SQL is really the best approach.

Does anyone have a better idea?

Best Way to Present a Complex Property with a Value (float) and Unit

I am interested in Tracking a Dimensional Property

For example, Engagement Stock Length of a Rod

I want to persist the value of the Length using SI (Meters) in the Database.

I want to allow the user interface to allow the user to select the Unit from a pre-defined units (inches, millimeters, feet, etc.)

When the user changes the value of the unit, I want the system to convert the value shown to that unit.

If the Unit shown is not Meters, I want the system to convert and save the value shown to Meters.

Has anyone done this? Does Aras have any advanced data types for this?

How to delete cookies that are stored by the R35 Import Tool? I right now cannot change the target database...

Hi community,

I want to upload a small package with the Import Tool. I did a test run first with a test database, that is on the same server as the target database. The test was successful. I now want to import the same data to the target database.

Now the fun part:

The modern WebView2-based high-tech "Import Tool" doesn´t allow me to switch the database. I get automatically logged in to the test database as soon as I entered my credentials. It´s seems that the session cookie is reused. Typically the preferred database is also stored in the cookies.

It´s no problem to delete the cookies in a regular browser. But how can I delete them in the Import Tool?

I have a couple of Import Tools, so I can also use an older version. But I wonder if there is a more elegant solution available.
Or do I really have to "wait" for the cookies to expire? The database cookie ist stored for 30 days.... 🙂

How to populate 'this' properties?

Hello,

Server event's context of 'this' is barren, in example it has only the Item header and no properties nested inside, therefore only getID() and getType() are the only functions that work.

How do I elegantly populate 'this' object? The remarks of fetchDefaultPropertyValues() reads as what would update only properties that have a default value, so I have rejected trying that.

I would feel strange doing

this.setAttribute('action', 'get')

this = this.apply();

Does that work?

Targeting Element on Form from Relationship Grid

Hello All,

I'm making a relationship grid event that fires on a row selection. It's meant to target an HTML control on the top item form and then will fill it with a TGV.

Trouble is, I'm running in circles trying to target the element on the form, which is called 'tgv'.

Lots of debugger tries in the console and methods and nothing is finding it.

Have tried...

top.mainWindow.document.getElementsByName("tgv")[0];
top.mainWindow.document.querySelector('div[name="tgv"]');

parent.document......

Any thoughts or help?

Logic for finding all references to an Identity (e.g., 'Where Used" or "Item is referenced")?

When a user (alias identity) is no longer active we need to determine where the identity has been referenced in both standard ways like group memberships, activity assignments, etc. - as well as custom usages specific to our applications.

Existing mechanisms include 'Where Used' which is TMI; and attempts to delete generates the system error 'referenced by another item'.

One approach would be to refine the results of the "Where Used" query logic to specific areas where admins can gracefully retire usage of the departing Identity.

John Sperling mentioned a configurable Where Used and Structure Browser at ACE 2024. I haven't heard of this being completed, but getting information on the generic query to find all references would help tremendously.

Secondary Language Label on Group Box Not Displaying in Responsive Form

Hello Aras Community,

I’m using Responsive Form Designer to build a custom Item Details form, and I’ve run into an issue with the Group Box control:

In the form designer, I placed a Group Box and filled in the Secondary Language Label (Japanese) as shown below:
However, when I view the Item Details page, the group box header does not display the Japanese label. It simply shows no header at all.
If I put Japanese text into the Primary Label (English) field instead, the header appears correctly in Japanese.

My questions are:

Is this behavior a bug or a known limitation of Responsive Form Designer?
What is the recommended way to show secondary‐language labels (e.g. Japanese) on group boxes in a responsive form?
Do I need to modify an XML resource or language pack to make it work?

Any guidance or best practices you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

R35/R2025 toolbar redesign: Simplified Icons + Labels = Usability Nightmare – How can we revert this quickly?

in general I am happy with most of the UI/UX improvements in R35/2025. Many of them are great ideas and we are happy that Aras added them.
BUT: There is one "improvement" that I don´t like and I am searching for options to revert it as fast as possible. I am looking for a solution that I can reuse on every Innovator instance that doesn’t want to follow the new 'simplification' design trend.

Aras has simplified the toolbar CUI buttons, aligning them more closely with the current - but questionable - trend of overly clean design. As a result, the icons have become harder to distinguish. To compensate, labels were added, but they take up a significant amount of space. The situation worsens when using the German or French language pack, where labels are typically 30- 40% longer. In that case, there’s hardly any pixel left for custom elements, often forcing the toolbar to wrap into a second row.

This is the default search grid in Release 35/2025:

This is a common layout that I use in I12/14:

Many of my ItemTypes have one or two custom buttons in the toolbar. They often use labels so people can easily see that the custom buttons are unique and important for the specific ItemType. In the shown sample I even removed one default element ("Today") to save some space.

Fun detail: Aras now uses the upload icon to represent 'share,' which doesn’t fit the context at all. This is especially confusing when custom buttons next to it actually perform "real" upload actions (like in my image)!

How can we bring back the previous design fast?
- I assume the additional labels can be removed in the language pack?
- Update the icons via AML?

What is your opinion regarding the design update?

Aras search grid edit OOTB issue

I have observed that when I try to check a Boolean property value as true from the main search grid window, it does not update correctly. On the server side, we are receiving the value as true instead of 1. Is there any workaround for this?

Tech Docs - 'Zoom'

We have some users who want larger text in their Tech Docs, so I'm looking for a way to dynamically apply CSS rules on a button.

When I go into the developer console, use the element selector to pick the editor pane and then run the following, it's doing what I want (in this case setting the editorContentNode to 150% width.

But, if I apply that in a button either in the tdf editor toolbar or on the itemview toolbar, it does nothing.

I'm assuming this is based on the structure of the DOM inside Aras. Any tips or tricks on sorting out how in the heck to select this? I'd prefer it from the tdf editor toolbar to keep all the tools in one spot.

does anyone of you use the classic "Parameters" tab?

It´s a quite old building technique. Technically it was replaced with xProperties.
But I have one use case where this classic tab is still used today.

Some end users report that the tab sometimes don´t show up when a Part opened. But the missing tab typically appears when the same Part is opened again or if the Part is edited. It doesn´t happen very often, but often enough for people to report the issue. In the rare cases the issue occurs, the complete tab is missing.

The used Innovator version 12SP7. I wonder if this behavior is caused by the Innovator version OR any of my custom Methods that are executing when opening the Form.

Is anyone familiar with the Parameters tab and has seen this behavior before?

Do I have to give external users "get" permission for an ItemType when using a MAC policy to restrict access?

Hi community,

let´s assume we have a lot of regular Parts in Innovator. An external user now shall have access to a limited amount of these Parts. An additional property specifies which parts he is allowed to see.

This scenario is a perfect job for a MAC policy. MAC policies allow to restrict the user access based on the property.

But I noticed that the external user still needs to be added to the regular permission that is used for Parts (e.g. Permission "Released Part"). Is this really necessary?

The MAC rule it self works fine. But only if the external user is part of the "Released Part" permission. Otherwise he will see nothing.
But I would prefer to avoid adding the user to this general permission.

Reason: When the external user is part of the regular permission, he could see all items by default. Only after the MAC rule is activated, the item access is restricted. But what if we upgrade and forget to reactive the MAC rule? Will the external user see everything until we notice our mistake?

I would prefer things the other way round. The external user must not see any Part UNTIL the MAC policy activated.

Is this behavior possible?

Use Src Access on regular item type?

I have a regular item type that is parent to some other regular item types.

I.e. we have Item A that has a relationship to Item AB, and Item AB has a relationship to BB.

A, AB, and BB are all regular items.

I want A's permissions to cascade onto anything below, but it seems that 'Use Src Access' only goes as far as A to Ab (the relationship item), as opposed to also placing A's permissions onto AB.

Can 'Use Src Access' reach AB and BB?

How to disable / enable an item selector when property itself is disabled in the (classic) Form editor?

Hi community,

I have an item selector that is disabled by default in an I12 Form. The value for the item property is set by Method most of the time.
Now there is one special use case were I want to allow users to choose the item manually. In this case I want to enable the item selector with an onLoad event.

I right now use the code sample of following blog article for disabling/enabling the selector: https://aras.com/en/blog/disable-form-fields
The code still works fine, but only when the "item property" is NOT disabled in the Form from the start.

This image shows the situation with two item selectors. The left one is disabled in the Form, the right one enabled. For both selectors I use the code from the blog article to enable the selecotors:

Does anyone know how to enable the item selector when it was completely disabled in the Form?

I assume the current solution needs the item selector button and the item box to be visible.
I would be prefer a solution where the item selector is either enabled - OR completely hidden. I want to avoid a "greyed-out" selector cause people still would assume they can use it somehow.

How can I choose a specific Search Mode when opening a Search Dialog via Method?

Is it possible to pre-select the used search mode?

Typically the "Simple" (Einfach) search mode is preselected. I have an additional custom search mode that is similar to Simple, but allows users to search for all generations of a Part.

In my use case user shall be able to search and select previous Part versions. So it would be convenient if my custom search mode would be selected automatically when the search dialog is opened.

I guess this is currently not possible. But maybe somebody has an idea?

Create a baseline or a snapshot with the actual data

We need to create differents baselines or snapshot with the actual versions of documents and parts at differents moments, to have trazability and know exactly which documents and parts versions were in current status at certaint test and milestones.

Is there a possibility to do it? I searched in documentations and itemtypes but i did not find nothing like that.

Validating Input/Partially Restrict Editing of Fields

Hi all,

I have a checklist (for users to fill out) in the form of a table as illustrated here:

It is a HTML table housed in a Formatted Text field. I would like to prevent users from modifying the checklist items (first column of the table) or perform some sort of validation of the checklist items to ensure that they haven't be deformed.

Having the items and the entries in a different field (and then disabling editing of the items field) is not an option as the list requires scrolling, and that would cause the items and entries to become misaligned.

Is there a way to achieve what I'm trying to do?

Revisions/Item Versions appearing blank

Hi all,

Created a new ItemType. Initially, when viewing an instance, Views > Revisions displays the Item Versions. However, after creating a few items, it then appears blank, as illustrated here:

I haven't changed anything (as far as I know), it just stops rendering after some time. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
